パリサイ人との話を終えられてエルサレムに上られるイエスに、人々が子どもたちに手をおいて祈ってもらおうと連れてくるのを弟子たちが止めようとした。

ルカ並行記事では、人々は「イエスにさわっていただくために （ルカ18:15）」子どもたちを連れてきた、となっている。「さわっていただく（癒していただく）」は「祈っていただく」と同義である。

人々は自らの子どもを連れてイエスに来て、「手をおいて祈っていただきたい」と願った。
当時の社会でも両親は子どもに「手を置く」ことを求めてラビたちを訪ねた。おそらくある母親たちが、ラビより力のあるイエスに「手を置いて」下さるように子どもたちを連れて来たのであろう。
ヤコブは手を子どもの頭に置き祝福している。（創世記48:14~15） 按手は「力の伝達」の象徴的行為であった。
＜弟子たち禁めたれば＞
子どもの頭に手をおいて祈っていただこうとする人々を弟子たちはたしなめる。
「たしなめる ἐπιτιμάω エピティマオー」は「ἐπί ＋ τιμή 値段」からくる言葉で、「（悪く）評価する、非難する、いさめる、叱責する」の意味である。弟子たちは強い口調で彼らの行為を非難し、しかりつけた。

「按手の祈り」
現代でもしばしば、教会の「力ある指導者」に「力の伝達」を願って「按手の祈り」を求める人がいる。しかし、
「按手」そのものに「力の伝達」の効果があるのではない。「按手」は「力の伝達」の象徴的行為であって、手段ではないからである。その源から伝達されてくるものにこそ深い意味がある。

「些細な事柄」
弟子たちは子どもを連れて来た母親たちを叱りつける。弟子たちにはそれは「些細な事柄」に思えたのである。
事の大小ですべてを計ると、意味の深さはほとんど失われてしまう。

「窘める」
弟子たちは幼子を連れてきた人々をたしなめる。
漢字「窘める」の「窘」は「くるしめる」の意味である。目下の者に軽く注意したつもりが、相手を困難な状況に追い込むこともある。

弟子たちは母親たちが連れてきた「幼子、子ども」を見て、神の国は「このような者」に与えられるべきものではないと判断して、たしなめたのであろう。
誰が「神の国」に「ふさわしい」か、人は判断してはならない。
しかし、人はしばしば、自分も含めて、「神の国にふさわしいか、否か」を決定するのである。
私達が知ることが出来るのは、神の国に最も遠い自分が「神の国」に招かれた事実だけである。
