And when he had begun taking account, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.
~ One talent (probably of silver, in this case) was equivalent to about 25 or so kilograms, so this was a huge sum of money. Also, to owe this large a sum, he would have to be one of the nobility, not the type of servant who did manual labor.

清算をはじめた王は、まず、「一万タラント」を貸し付けた僕から返済を求めた。

「タラント」は旧約時代には34.272㎏であったが、新約時代は20.4㎏の重量を意味した。通貨では1タラントは6000デナリに相当した。１デナリは一日の労賃であった。（1万タラントは成人男子の約20年分の年収にあたる）
この家来は王から莫大な借金をしていたことになる。王が「家来たちに貸した金の決済」をしようとしたのは、この男の存在が理由であったのかもしれない。男には莫大な借金をしていながら、一向に返済をする意志がみられなかったのである。

「タレント」
「タラントτάλαντον タらントン」は重さの単位のなかで最大を意味し、通貨の単位である。「才能・技能」を意味する英語 talente が生まれ、現代では「talent タレント」として芸能人を指す。
不思議なことだが、王から「一万タラント」もの借金をしたこの家来は返済する気持ちがない。「タレント」を豊かに与えられた者はその返済に行き詰まることが多い。

「タレント（才能、能力）」
自分は豊かなタレント（才能、能力）に恵まれているというのは高慢である。自分には何のタレント（才能、能力）もないというのも高慢である。
自分をふくらませず、しぼませもせず、ありのままに生きられれば幸いである。

王が一万タラントもの金を預けられた男から返済を求めはじめたことから、天国では「賜物の豊かな人」から裁かれると考え、自分は王の返済を受けるに値しないと考えるなら、大きな間違いである。
ここで、人間は一人残らず、この僕のように神から最大のタラントを借り受けたのである。
神が人に「貸し出す」タラントは、才能や富、環境や運、時や健康だけではない。神からのタラントの最大のものは「罪の許し」である。
いかななる罪も、その重さにかかわらず、神は「七を七十倍するまで、終わりなく、東が西に遠いように遠ざけ」される。
「許し」は、許されてそれで終わりではない。
「許されたいのち」をどのように生きるかに、「許しの実」を結ぶことがかかっている。
生涯の終わりに、神はその「清算」をもとめられるのである。
