フィレンツェのサンタ・マリア・デル・カルミネ聖堂にはマザッチオの描いた「貢の銭」の絵が掲げられている。画面の中央にイエスと弟子たちが、その左端にかがんで魚を捕えるペテロと左端には取税人に銀貨を渡すペテロが描かれている。
ペテロが釣り上げた魚を「セント・ピーターズ・フィッシュ 聖ペテロの魚」という。ガリラヤ湖産の淡水魚で黒スズメダイの一種で「幸運の魚」として提供される。カファルナウムの町に建つペテロ像の足元の「魚」がそれかもしれない。
「ペテロの魚」は雀鯛で、口に卵を含んで孵化し、稚魚を口の中で育てる。稚魚が育つと吐き出すが、そのとき水とともに小石や砂を吸い込む習性から、水底の「銀貨」をくわえたのかもしれない。

ペトロが湖に釣り針を垂らすと、口にギリシャ銀貨をくわえた魚が釣れた。それは丁度イエスとペテロの２人分の神殿税に相当した。

ペテロは漁師だったので、海に糸を垂れ、漁師としての労働によって「神殿税」を支払ったのである。
