光る雲の中からの声を聴いて、3人の弟子たちは地に倒れ伏し、恐れおののいた。

弟子たちは「光れる雲」を見、そこから響く声を聞いて、非常に恐れ、地に身体を伏せた。
人間は神の姿を直接見ることはできない。
モーセは燃える柴から神が語るのを聞いたとき、「神を見ることを畏れてその面を蔽せり」（出エジプト3:6）、とある。
弟子たちは神の臨在に、モーセのように恐れて地に伏したのであろう。

「非常に恐れた」
弟子たちは天からの声を聞いて「非常に恐れた」。「恐れた φοβέομαι ふォベオマイ」は「恐怖」を意味し、弟子たちは激しい恐怖に襲われたのである。
神の「これに聞け」という言葉の前に立つとき、人は神の求めに応じ得ない弱い自分に、心からの「恐れ」を感じるのである。しかし、この「恐れ」は信仰の基礎である。

「ヨブの苦悩」
試みの中にあるヨブにヨブの友人エリファズは「神を畏れる生き方が、あなたの頼みではなかったか」とヨブを問いただす。（ヨブ4:6） これに対してヨブは「絶望している者にこそ、友は忠実であるべきだ。さもないと全能者への畏敬をうしなわせることになる」と答える。（ヨブ6:14）
人の「恐れ」に簡単に介入してはならない。

敬虔の思いに自らの膝を折り、地に伏す行為である。
