モーセとエリヤは、「イエスがエルサレムで遂げようとしておられる最期について話していた」（ルカ9:31）。 モーセはイスラエルの出エジプトを導き、エリヤはメシア到来を備える終末の預言者であった。彼らは解放のために来られたイエスの「最期」について「協議した」のである。
「モーセ」は律法を、「エリヤ」は預言者を代表する。

変貌山ではモーセとエリヤがイエスの死について「語り合う」。「モーセ」は律法を、「エリヤ」は預言者を代表する。イエスの十字架は「律法」と「預言」、すなわち旧約聖書全体に導かれ、それらを完成するのである。
