この聖句からローマ・カトリック教会は、人間が天国に入るのを許可し、あるいは拒否する鍵がペテロに与えられ、その権限が初代の教皇ペテロから歴代のローマ教皇に与えられ継承されたと解釈する。プロテスタントはそれを受け入れていない。
＜カトリック教会＞
カトリック Catholicus は「一般的、普遍的」を意味するギリシャ語 καθολίκος に由来する。アンティオキアの司教イグナティウス（35~105頃）が最初に教会に用いたとされている。
＜あなたは岩（ペトロ）である＞
ギリシャ語で「Πέτρος ペトロス」は男性名詞で「岩」を意味し、「ぺトラ pe,tra」はその女性名詞で「岩」を意味する。ヘブル語では双方ともに「ケファ（ケパ）」で区別はない。
おそらく、イエスはペテロに「あなたはペトロ、すなわち岩である。この岩の上にわたしはわたしの教会を建てる」と言われたのであろう。「岩」とは上からペテロに現された「あなたはキリスト（メシア）、生ける神の子です」という教会の礎石としての告白である。
＜教会＞
「教会 ἐκκλησία エククれーシア」は「ἐκ ＋ καλέω 呼ぶ」で「呼び出して集める」の意味で「市民の公の集会」に用いられた。イエスの「教会」はまず、ペトロという一人の人間に始まった。上からの導きにより、「覆い」が取り払われ、神のことばを明らかにされた人々の集まりを意味した。教会は神を信じ礼拝する者の「公の集まり」として建設されたのである。
＜黄泉の門 πύλαι ᾅδου＞
「黄泉の門 πύλαι ᾅδου」は、バルバロ訳「地獄の門」、フランシスコ会訳「陰府の国の門」、塚本虎次訳「黄泉の門［死の力］」、詳訳聖書「ハデスの門＜地獄の権力＞」と訳される。
旧約外典 エノク書21.7.1 には「陰府の世界」について「そして、そこから、この〔場所〕よりも怖ろしい別の場所にめぐっていった、その場所は、底なき深淵に達する裂け目を有し、〔その裂け目は〕下向きに燃えあがる大きな火柱に満ち満ちていた。その規模も大きさも、わたしは見ることはもとより想像することさえできなかった」と記されている。そこでは黄泉は堕天使のために設けられた場所をさしている。

教会は建造物でも組織でもない。ペテロの信仰告白にはじまり、私の内に建てられる信仰である。それは 「ἐκκλησία エククれーシア （聴くために呼ばれた者の集まり）」 である。内に建てられる教会は多くの「聴くために呼ばれた者」という会衆を擁し、私は彼らとともに神に聴き、賛美し、祈る。

「黄泉の門はこれに勝たざるべし」
「陰府の門」とは死者のすむ地下世界であり、刑罰の場を意味する。
イエスの建てられる「教会」に、陰府の門（死の力）もその力を失う。
死の力を退けるのはいのちの力である。

「活ける神の教会」

ペテロの告白を聞かれたイエスはペテロを祝福され、「我この磐の上に我が教會を建てん、黄泉の門はこれに勝たざるべし」と言われた。
この聖句からローマ・カトリック教会は、人間が天国に入るのを許可し、あるいは拒否する鍵がペテロに与えられ、その権限が初代の教皇ペテロから歴代のローマ教皇に与えられ継承されたと解釈する。本節から教皇による「カソリック教会」が始まった。
プロテスタントはそれを受け入れていない。
カトリック Catholicus は「一般的、普遍的」を意味するギリシャ語 καθολίκος に由来する。アンティオキアの司教イグナティウス（35~105頃）が最初に教会に用いたとされている。
「あなたは岩（ペトロ）である」
ギリシャ語で「Πέτρος ペトロス」は男性名詞で「岩」を意味し、「ぺトラ pe,tra」はその女性名詞で「岩」を意味する。ヘブル語では双方ともに「ケファ（ケパ）」で区別はない。
おそらく、イエスはペテロに「あなたはペトロ、すなわち岩である。この岩の上にわたしはわたしの教会を建てる」と言われたのであろう。「岩」とは上からペテロに現された「あなたはキリスト（メシア）、生ける神の子です」という教会の礎石としての告白である。
「教会 ἐκκλησία エククれーシア」は「ἐκ ＋ καλέω 呼ぶ」で「呼び出して集める」の意味で「市民の公の集会」に用いられた。イエスの「教会」はまず、ペテロという一人の人間に始まった。そして、上からの導きにより、「覆い」が取り払われ、神のことばを明らかにされた人々の集まりを意味した。教会は神を信じ礼拝する者の「公の集まり」として建設されたのである。
「教会」は教皇の権能によって建てられ、「天の御国の鍵」を託せられたところではない。
「教会」は「血肉によらず、天にいます我が父」により「なんぢはキリスト、活ける神の子なり」の告白そのものとしての「活ける神の教会」である。
