弟子たちはイエスと共に舟で移動した。そのとき、弟子たちは自分たちがパンを一つしか持ち合わせていないことに気づいた。
＜パンを携ふることを忘れたり＞
イエスと弟子たちは「向こう岸（異邦人の地）」に渡られた。そして、弟子たちは「パン」を持参しなかったことに気づいた。マルコ並行記事では「舟の中にはパン一つしか持ち合わせがなかった」（マルコ8:14）とある。
「その間に、おびただしい群衆が、互に踏み合うほどに群がってきた」（ルカ12:1）のである。
＜パンを持って来るのを忘れていた＞
当時の「パン」は前日の「こね鉢」に残した捏粉を「パン種」として加えて発酵させ焼いて作られた。ユダヤ人は異邦人の焼いたパンを「汚れたパン」として食べなかった。「汚れたパン種」のパンだからである。
「向こう岸（異邦人の地）」に渡った弟子たちは「パン」を持参しなかったことで、問題が発生した。弟子たちは異邦人の焼いたパンしかない所で、どうやって「パリサイ人、サドカイ人」の作る「浄いパン」を手に入れることができるのだろうかと思い悩んだ。

「隠れた影響」
携えることを忘れた「パン」の問題から、弟子たちの心に隠れている「パリサイ派とサドカイ派の影響」が表面化してくる。
伝達された信仰には、本人も知らない「思い」が隠されている。それらが現れてきたときは、一つ一つを丁寧に扱う。それによって信仰は伝達されたものから生けるものに変わる。

「パンを持って来るのを忘れていた」
弟子たちは向こう岸に渡ったが、誰もパンの準備をしていなかった。「忘れていた ἐπιλανθάνομαι エピらンたノマイ」には「軽視する」の意味もある。「パンを準備する」のは目下の者の役目である。うっかり「忘れた」のではなく、弟子たちの内で「誰がそれをするか」で探り合いがあり、それをする者がいなかったのだろう。
弟子たちの間で「だれがいちばん偉いだろうか」という議論があった（ルカ２２：２４）
主は「あなたがたの中でいちばん偉い人は、いちばん若い者のようになり、上に立つ人は、仕える者のようになりなさい」と教えられた。（ルカ22:26）
上に立つ者が「年若い者の役割を引き受ける」のはよいが、そうしたところ、それが当たり前のことになるようであれば、それは間違っている。はじめから「上に立つ者」の役割が失われているのである。

弟子たちはイエスと共に舟で移動した。そのとき、弟子たちは自分たちがパンを一つしか持ち合わせていないことに気づいた。

人は律法の儀式によって浄められることはない。罪の浄めはイエスの「十字架と復活」にある。
イエスは「十字架と復活」によって律法の求めを満たされたのである。
イエスの教えを決定的に経験するまでは、すべての人は古い教えの中にいる。
だが、それまでの期間も、イエスは共におられ、その弱さを励まされる。
