群衆の中に食料を探した弟子たちにイエスは「パン幾つあるか」と問われると、弟子たちは「七つ、また小き魚すこし」と報告した。
＜パン幾つあるか＞
「四千人の給食」は先の「五千人の給食」（マタイ14:16~21）と類似していることから、一つの出来事の異なる記録とする考えもある。しかし、人々の数や提供されたパンの違いなど、細部は別の出来事であることを示している。
「四千人の給食」では弟子たちが見つけた「七つのパンと少しの魚」をイエスが祝福されて男だけで四千人が「食べて満腹した」。

今回も男性だけで四千人の群衆のうち、集めることのできた食料は「七つのパンと小魚」だった。これは一人分の昼食にすぎない。
神が祝福されるのは「とるに足りない少量のもの」である。それは圧倒的な量の前には何の意味もないが、神はそのような「とるに足りない少量のもの」を用いられ、多くのものを養われる。
世に賜物の多い人は少なくない。しかし、神が用いられるのは「優れた賜物」ではなく「とるに足りない賜物」である。
