＜されど口より出づるものは心より出づ、これ人を汚すものなり＞
人を汚すのは、「口から入るもの」ではなく、「口から出るもの」すなわち「人の心」から出るものが人を汚す。
＜言葉＞
「口から出るもの」とは言葉である。言葉は「心 καρδία カルディア 精神、思考、感情の座」 から出て、その在り様を雄弁に語るのである。
＜人を汚すもの＞
「汚す κοινόω コイノオー」は「κοινός コイノス 通常の、日常の」から来た言葉で、「世俗」の意味があり、そこから「汚れた」という意味に用いられる。
日常的なもの、世俗的なもの、共通するものは「汚れている」という認識がある。
イエスは、人を汚すものは外から人に来るのではなく、内から出て人を汚すのであると教えられる。

「口禍之門」
「口禍之門 （口はの門）」という。しかし、災難の入口であるが、幸いの入口でもある。
口才に富む者の舌禍にくらべれば、口下手のほうがはるかに禍は少ない。そこでつい弁舌爽やかよりも口下手を信用してしまうが、それにも落とし穴がある。
「口より出づるもの」から「心」を探るのは、スイカをポンポン叩いて熟れぐわいを確かめるようなわけにはいかない。

「信仰の告白」
「口より出づるもの」とは、まずファリサイ人の教えを意味している。彼らは「口では神を敬う」がその「心は神から遠く離れている」。
信仰の告白は、告白された言葉が定めに正確であるかよりも、その心に受け入れられたものが問われる。そのところを誤魔化してはならない。キリスト者は自分が何を信じ、何を信じられないかを明確にしておきたい。
