ペテロがイエスのように水の上を歩いたと理解する根拠はない。人はいかなる場合でも水の上を歩くことはできない。
では、イエスは何故にペテロに「来なさい」と言われたのだろうか。
イエスは今もペテロに言われたように私に「来なさい」と言われるのである。

「奇跡の中の奇跡」

「もしあなたなら、私に命じて、水の上をあるいてここまで来いと命じて下さい」というペテロにイエスは「来たれ」と言われた。そこで、ペテロは舟を下り、海の上に立った。
「もし、あなたでしたら、私に水の上を歩いてここまで来いと命じてください」というペテロの信仰の未熟を責めることをせず、イエスは一言、「来たれ」と言わる。
神を試そうとするペテロは、逆にその信仰が試される。
水の上を歩くという信仰はないし、また、そう信じるのが信仰でもない。
神は人間と世界をそのようにお創りにはならなかった。
「来たれ」と言われるイエスの御顔は厳しかったに違いない。
イエスはペテロに「歩け」と命じられたのではなく、「我は在りてある者なり。恐れるな」と語られたのである。
しばしば、信仰者は水の上を歩けない自分に失望する。しかし、間違えてはならない。水の上を歩けると思ってはならない。それは自分を神にすることである。
私に神が「我は在りてある者なり」と名を告げられ、私の「恐れ」が消えることこそが奇跡の中の奇跡である。
