イエスは群衆に草のうえに座るようにお命じになり、「五つのパンと二つの魚」と取り、神に祈り、パンを裂いて弟子たちに渡された。弟子たちはパンを人々に配った。
＜かくて群衆に命じて草の上に坐せしめ＞
イエスは弟子たちに、「人々をおおよそ五十人ずつの組にして、すわらせなさい」（ルカ9:14）と命じられ、人々は「あるいは百人ずつ、あるいは五十人ずつ、列をつくってすわった」（マルコ6:39）。

「座る avnakli,nw アナクリノー」は 「後ろにもたせかかる、寝かせる、横たえる」で、当時の食事は身を横たえる形でなされた。イエスは五千人の群衆に「草の上で食卓につく」ように横になるように命じられたのである。
＜賛美の祈り＞
「賛美の祈りを唱え εὐλογέω エウろゲオー」は 「神をほめたたえる、祝福する、感謝する、聖別する、賛美する」の意味。イエスは天を見上げ、神を賛美し、祝福された後に、パンを裂かれる。これはユダヤ人家族の食卓における父親の務めだった。
