＜ヨハネの埋葬＞

ダマズカスのウマイヤ・モスクはもともと洗礼者ヨハネ教会というキリスト教の教会であったが705年ウマイヤ朝のカリフ・ワードⅠ世の時代にイスラム教のモスクに変更されたものである。モスクのほぼ中央に「洗礼者ヨハネの聖堂」があり、多くの信徒が祈りをささげている。
＜バプテスマのヨハネの遺骨発見？＞
2010年、ブルガリアの教会の遺跡から右手の指関節、歯、頭蓋骨の一部、肋骨、前腕の尺骨の6個の人間の骨が発掘された。指関節の骨に含まれていたコラーゲンのDNA鑑定と放射性炭素測定から、紀元1世紀に中東で生きていた人の骨である可能性が高いことがわかったことから、この遺骨がバプテスマのヨハネのものではないかとの憶測も生まれたが確証はない。「遺骨」はソフィアにある大聖堂で公開された。
盆に乗せられたヨハネの首をヘロデアがどうしたか、弟子たちに渡され埋葬された遺体に首があったかどうか等、一切は不明である。

「葬り」
ヨハネ処刑の一報はまず弟子たちに知らされた。弟子たちは直ちに遺体を引き取り埋葬した。（マルコ6:29）
ユダヤ人は、百人もの子どもをもち長生きできたとしても、死んで葬られることがなければ、生まれてこなかったほうがましだと考える。彼の「百人の子ども」の誰ひとりとして父を葬ることをしなかったからである。
死者を手厚く葬れ。やがて、自分も葬られることになる。
「假令人百人の子を擧けまた長壽してその年齢の日多からんも 若その心景福に滿足せざるか又は葬らるることを得ざるあれば 我言ふ流產の子はその人にまさるたり」 伝道6:3 明治元訳聖書

ギリシャ語「殉教者 μάρτυρ」は「μαρτύριον マルトゆリオン 証人」からきた言葉である。この言葉から英語「殉教者 martyr」が生まれた。
神を証しする者は、殉教者として処刑されなくても、いのちをかけて真実を証しする者としてみな「殉教者」である。
「すなわち、ヨハネのバプテスマから始まって、私たちを離れて天に上げられた日までの間、いつも私たちと行動をともにした者の中から、だれかひとりが、私たちとともにイエスの復活の証人とならなければなりません。」 使徒1:22 新改訳聖書
