＜王憂ひたれど、その誓と席に在る者とに對して、之を與ふることを命じ＞
領主ヘロデはサロメの申し出に戸惑い、何とか説き伏せようとしたがかなわず、「誓い」を聞いた者たちも注目しているので取り消しはできず、兵士に命じてバプテスマのヨハネの首を盆の上に載せて運ぶように命じた。
＜心を痛める＞
ヘロデヤの企みはヘロデを苦しませる。「心を痛める λυπέω りゅぺオー」は「悲しませる、憂えさせる、悲嘆にくれる、苦悩させる、心を痛める、苦しませる」で、ヘロデの心の動揺を示す。「誓い」をもって約束したことであり、目撃者としての客も大勢いる。ヘロデヤはヘロデが断れないことを計算したうえで動いている。

「安堵感」
余興の褒美に「バプテスマのヨハネの首」を求められてヘロデは「憂いて」見せる。人々の面前での「誓い」もあって、仕方なくサロメの求めに応じたようだが、内心では、ヨハネの処刑を正当化できる口実が見つけたことへのある種の「安堵感」を禁じ得なかったのではないだろうか。
しかし、この種の「安堵感」は一時のものにすぎない。

「謀り」
国主ピリポが死ぬとローマ皇帝はヘロデにではなくアグリッパにピリポの領地と国王の称号を与えた。ヘロデヤはそれを不満とし夫ヘロデと共にローマにのぼり、王の称号を受けるように勧めた。しかし、アグリッパは先手を打ってヘロデに謀反の意ありと密告し、ヘロデはローマに到着すると同時に領地、財産を没収され、遠くガリアに流刑となり、そこで死んだ。
もれない謀というものはない。謀を廻らす者はいつか謀に絡めとられる。
