国主ヘロデがイエスの噂に「あれはバプテスマのヨハネだ」と怯えることになったバプテスマのヨハネとの事件が語られる。国主ヘロデは自分の兄弟ピリポの妻ヘロデヤを娶り、そのことを「罪」と断罪したバプテスマのヨハネを捕えて投獄した。
＜ヘロディアのことで＞
「ヘロディア」はヘロデ大王の孫で叔父ヘロデ・ピリポの妻であったが、ローマを訪れたヘロデ・ピリポの兄ヘロデ・アンティパス（領主ヘロデ）がヘロディアに思いを寄せ、自分の妻を離縁してヘロディアを妻とした。バプテスマのヨハネは領主ヘロデに「自分の兄弟の妻と結婚することは、律法で許されていない」と告発した。ヨハネは投獄されたが、処刑されていなかった。それはヘロデが、ヨハネを「正しい聖なる人である」と認め「彼を恐れ、保護し、また、その教えを聞いて非常に当惑しながらも、なお喜んで耳を傾けていた」（マルコ6:20）からである。

「ねじれた感情」
ヘロデには自分を告発する者を迫害しながらも、密かにその教えに「喜んで耳を傾ける」というねじれた感情がある。ねじれた感情が信仰に「耳を傾け」ても、「真実」に至ることは難しい。

「ヘロデヤとヘロデ・アンティパス」
ヘロデヤはヘロデ・アンティパスにとっては「破滅をもたらす妻」だった。ヘロデヤは夫ヘロデ・アンティパスが「王」の称号を持たず、「tetraa,rchj テロラアルケース （四分領の）領主、四分の一の支配者 the tetrarch」に過ぎないことを不満に思い、夫と共にカリグラ帝に「王の位」を認めるように願ったが、カリグラ帝はこれを警戒し、ヘロデ・アンティパスから領主の座を剥奪し、妻ヘロデヤと共にガリアのサン・ベルトラン・ド・コマンジュに追放した。二人は失意の内に流刑地で死亡した。
ヘロデヤとヘロデ・アンティパスの間には互いを引き付ける何ものかがあり、それがを二人を最後まで一緒に歩ませたようだ。
似たものが集まると、その傾向は強化してとどまるところを知らない。

しかし、それは正しく罪に向き合うという信仰とは違う、人間の心にあるもう一つの罪であるかもしれない。それに身を任せてしまえば、それなりに居心地のよさがある。
罪を認識するということは、それとは違う厳しいものなのである。
