古代の麦は「ヒトツブコムギ Einkorn wheat」の名のように一つの穂に一粒の実が普通であった。ヨーロッパでは10世紀の時点で1~3倍、14~15世紀に入って4~5倍、16~17世紀で6~7倍、10倍を超えるのは19世紀に入ってからある。現在の倍率はヨーロッパで15~16倍、アメリカで20~25倍程度となっている。日本は収穫倍率が異常に高く、50倍を超えることも珍しくはないという。
このことから、一粒の麦が「あるひは百倍、あるひは六十倍、あるひは三十倍の實を結ぶ」というのは、ありえない表現であることがわかる。

「途方もない実り」
「あるひは百倍、あるひは六十倍、あるひは三十倍の實」とあるところから、自分は最も少ない「三十倍」と思ってはいけない。一粒の麦から2~3粒の麦になるのが普通であるなら、「三十倍」は途方もない多くの実である。
神のことばは人のうちに播かれ、途方もない豊かな実を結ぶ。
小麦の花言葉は「富」「繁栄」（イギリス）、「希望」「豊作」（フランス）である。

「神の種」
「良き地」に落ちた種にも収穫量は百倍、六十倍、三十倍と差がある。「神の種」にもあるものは多く、あるものはそれに比べれば少ない。すべての「種」に同じ結果があるのではない。
「収穫差」は種の優劣でも、土地の良し悪しによるのはない。百倍の種、六十倍の種、三十倍の種であって、種はそれぞれ己が役割を果たす。

「美しい地」
「良き地 τὴν γῆν τὴν καλὴν」の「良い καλός カろス」は「美しい、見事な」の意味がある。「良き地」は「目的に叶う」ことで、目的に叶うものは美しい。

「蒔く人も刈る人も、共に喜ぶ」
ヨハネ4:37に「一人が種を蒔き、別の人が刈りいれる」とある。「蒔く人」は必ずしも「刈る人」ではない。
自分では苦労しなかったものを刈りいれることがあり、自分が苦労したのに他人が刈りいれることがある。だが、イエスは「種を蒔く人も刈る人も、共に喜ぶのである」と言われる。（ヨハネ4:36）
実際には、自分で苦労したのに他人が刈り取るものよりも、他人が蒔いたものを苦労もしない私が刈り取るほうが、遥かに多い。

興味深いことは、「神のことば」がその人の中で実を結ぶとき、「百倍、六十倍、三十倍」と穂によって収穫量に差があることである。
「百倍、六十倍、三十倍」の差が何によって生じるかは問題にされていない。ただ、その事実が語られているのみである。農夫は常に、何とかして少しでも多くの量の収穫を期待するのである。
人間は「良き地」として神に創造された。
「あなたがたは神の畑、神の建物なのです」 Ⅰコリント3:9
神の創造された「人間」という「良き地」に「神のことは」は種として蒔かれる。その結実は一様ではなく、穂によって質も量も異なる。
期待すべきは、「神のことば」が、さらなる意味深き、数多くの「実」を結ぶことである。
間違えてはならないことは、穂の結ぶ実の「質と量」は「種」そのものに内包されていることである。
人の努力は、ただ、その「種」を大切に育てるだけである。
