三番目の種は茨の地に落ちた。茨の中でも、種は発芽し、根を張り、成長した。しかし、成長と共に棘が立ちふさがり、葉を伸ばすことができなかったために、実を結ぶことはできなかった。

パレスティナでは至る所にいばらが繁茂した。農夫は種を蒔く前に火を放っていばらを焼き払い、その灰は肥料になった。これを怠る「怠け者」の畑は荒れ果てて使い物にならない。（箴言24:30,31）

「手入れの悪い地」
「茨の地」は一見して「良き地」と変わらないが、地中には茨の根が縦横矛盾に根を伸ばしている地である。種を捲く前に、茨の根を掘り起こさなければならない。
手入れの悪い地によきものは生えない。

「心に生える雑草」
畑には驚く量の雑草の種が埋まっている。畑の雑草を取り除く方法はただ一つ、雑草の芽を丹念にかき取ることである。一度や二度ではすまない。雑草は地の表面をかきとられると、すぐに次に控えた種が芽をだすからである。
現代は雑草だけ枯らす農薬がある。これを使えば雑草は退治できるが、その畑で採れた野菜は食べる気がしない。農薬は雑草だけでなく地も殺してしまうからである。
雑草は抜いて腐らせ、地に戻していくのが一番良い。心に生える雑草もまた自身であることにかわりはない。農薬などにまかせず、愛おしんで扱うべきである。

原文を直訳すれば「δὲ ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ τὰς ἀκάνθας 茨の上に落ちた」となる。種は発芽し根も伸びたが、あとから「茨」が伸びて植物を覆ってしまったのである。種は茨の根の残り、やがて茨に覆われる地に落ちたのである。
茨の中に落ちた種は発芽もし、根も張ったが、成長を妨げる棘に覆われ、棘を越えることができなかった。
茨に落ちた種は、茨の中で成長を妨げられ、枯れることはなかったが、あまりにひ弱で、実を結ぶには至らない「神のことば」を譬えている。
神のことばは、芽を出し、根を張ることができても、その成長を塞ぐ「茨」というものがある。
どのような「よき畑」にも「茨」は生える。農夫は常に見張って茨を抜くのである。
問題は「種」が茨の真中に落ちたことである。
「茨の真中」にも「神のことば」は入る。だが、「茨」の勢いが「神のことば」に優れば、「神のことばは実を結ばない。
そのようにして失われた神のことばは数知れなくあることを認めなければならない。
「神のことば」に問題があるのではなく、「取り除く」ことができないほどの茨の真中というものを思考しなければならないであろう。
「聞く耳のある者」が実を結ぶのである。（マタイ11:15）
