マルコ並行記事では、彼らは「人をやってイエスを呼ばせた」マルコ3:31 とあり、ルカ並行記事ではその人がイエスに「取次いだ」ルカ8:20 ことがわかる。
＜イエスの兄弟＞
イエスにはヤコブ、ヨセフ、シモン、ユダという4人の兄弟、と妹（名前と人数は不明）がいたことがわかっている（マタイ13:55~56）。これらの「イエスの兄弟姉妹」については諸説ある。
カソリック教会は、「イエスの兄弟たち」は血のつながった厳密な意味での兄弟や義兄弟を意味するのではなく、「いとこ」であって、聖母マリアの子ではないとする。
＜イエスの母と兄弟たち＞
イエスの母と兄弟たちはファリサイ派の不穏な動きを察知し、心配してやって来たが、群衆のために近づけなかった（ルカ8:19）。しかし、実際には彼らはイエスの会話の「外に」立っていたのである。
ヨハネは「是その兄弟たちもイエスを信ぜぬ故なり」と記している。（ヨハネ7:5）

「親しい人々の心配」
親しい人々の「心配」は、ときに問題の核心から外れる。それが「愛だ」という思いが彼らの行動を確信的なものにする。相手に聴こうとしない愛は破壊的である。

ことの時、イエスの兄弟たちはイエスをメシアとして信じることがまだできていなかった。
「是その兄弟たちもイエスを信ぜぬ故なり」（ヨハネ7:5）
そこで、彼らは「イエスを狂へりと謂ひて」、「イエスを取押へんとて出で來た」マルコ3:21 のである。
イエスに従う者で、イエスの家族におこったことを経験しない者はいない。

「疑いの日々を経て」
「この人々はみな女たち及びイエスの母マリヤ、イエスの兄弟たちと共に、心を一つにして只管いのりを務めゐたり」 使徒1:14 大正文語訳聖書
イエスの兄弟たちはイエスに危険が迫る中でイエスを信じることができずにいたが、十字架と復活の後にエルサレムにある「屋上の間」に集まって心を一つにして祈る人々のなかに、彼らがいることがわかる。母マリヤと兄弟たちはイエスを信じたのである。
身内の者が長い疑いの日々を経たのちに神を信じることは希ではない。

「肉親の情愛を越えて」

イエスはなおも群衆に語っておられた。そこにイエスの母マリヤとイエスの兄弟たちがやって来た。彼らは群衆のために家に入れず、外に立っていた。

イエスの母マリヤとイエスの兄弟たちほど、イエスを近くにあってイエスを知る者たちはいない。母マリヤはその胎にあるときからイエスを知り、イエスの兄弟たちは幼いときから、イエスの教えを聞き、イエスの奇跡も目撃した。彼らはイエスのすべてを知っていたが、その彼らにしても、今のイエスの言動と状況は、危険極まりないものに思えたのである。
イエスの母と兄弟たちは心配してやって来たが、群衆のために近づけなかった（ルカ8:19）。しかし、実際には彼らはイエスの会話の「外に」立っていたのである。
ヨハネは「是その兄弟たちもイエスを信ぜぬ故なり」と記している。（ヨハネ7:5）
信仰は肉親の情をもっても正しく知ることはできない。
イエスを取り押さえようとする彼らの「肉親の情愛」も、「信仰」ではなく、むしろ「不信」である。
「信仰」は「肉親の情愛」をもってしても引きとどめることのできない神の世界にある。
