「七つの悪霊」が何かについては明確ではない。ルカ8:2には、イエスがマグダラのマリアから「七つの悪霊」を追い出されたことが記されている。

「生きた人間」
信仰の最も大きな問題は、信者を「整えられた空家」にし、そこに「人」を住まわせないことが生じてしまう点にある。「悪しきもの」は出て行き、外観も中身も綺麗に整えられたが、「生きた人間」が不在である。そこに「悪しきもの」が七つの仲間を引き連れて戻ってくる。その結果その人の「後の状態は前よりも悪し」となる。だが、この家はもともと「棲みつくもの」に無関心で、七つの悪しき霊の振る舞いにも気づかない。
真の信仰は「整えられた家」にふさわしい主が住まうかで見分けられる。

穢れた霊からの解放は、一回の祈りによってなされるのではない。
穢れた霊は抜き出されたとしても、それによって「正常な姿を取り戻した人格」も「綺麗に清掃された住む人のない空き家」であれば、穢れた霊はむしろ喜んで「かつての我が家」に戻って来る。しかも、その時は地を彷徨う、より強力な「七つの悪霊」を引き連れてくる。
「穢れた霊」は死の匂いのする墓地のような地に棲むと思われるが、むしろ、よく整えられた清潔なところも彼らの好む場なのである。
悪霊と人間の関係は、混乱のない理性の中にも及ぶと知る必要がある。
悪霊に自らを譲り渡しているのに、それと気づかない理性ほど危険なことはない。
「邪悪な時代」とはそのようなものである。
