イエスはイザヤ書42:1~4を引用される。
神は「わが選びたる我が僕、 わが心の悦ぶ我が愛しむ者」を遣わし、「わが靈を彼に與へ」、「異邦人に正義を告げ示さん」と言われた。
＜視よ、わが選びたる我が僕、 わが心の悦ぶ我が愛しむ者＞
マタイ12:18~21はイザヤ42:1~4の引用である。
イザヤ41章に「わたしの僕イスラエルよ」「わたしの選んだヤコブよ」とあり、ここではイスラエル全体が「わたし〔神〕の愛する友、アブラハムの末」である。
イザヤ42章の「主の僕」は直接には、イスラエルをバビロンの支配から解放したペルシャのキュロス王を指すと思われる。キュロスは「主の油を注がれた〔メシア〕」と呼ばれている（イザヤ45:9）。
しかし、イスラエルを解放する「主の僕」は未だ現れず、人々はその出現を強く待ち望んだ。マタイは預言者イザヤの預言した「主の僕」がイエスにおいて実現したことを明らかにする。
＜彼は異邦人に正義を告げ示さん＞

バルバロ訳 「異邦人にまことの信仰を告げる」
日本正教会訳 「諸民に審判を示さん」
永井直治訳 「國人に裁を宣ぶべし」
「正義」と訳されたギリシャ語「κρίσις クリシス」は 「判決、刑罰、公平、公正、公義、正義」の意味から「裁き」である。
イエスはユダヤ人のみならず異邦人の「主」である。
＜異邦人 gentiles＞
「異邦人 ἔθνος エとノス」
ユダヤ人の立場からユダヤ人以外の民族をさす。ヘブライ語で gôyîm。ユダヤ人は神の選民の自覚から唯一神信仰と厳格な律法を保持し、そのことによって異邦人を排除した。

「福音」
イエスが洗礼を受けられたとき、天から『これは我が愛しむ子、わが悦ぶ者なり』の声があり（マタイ3:17）、今や『視よ、わが選びたる我が僕、 わが心の悦ぶ我が愛しむ者、 我わが靈を彼に與へん、 彼は異邦人に正義を告げ示さん』と告げられる。
神の民が福音を拒めば、それを受け取る資格のない一段と低い者たちに行くだろう。

「異邦人」
我らは「異邦人」である。神を知らず、イエスを知らない。だが、異邦人の心にイエス来たり給う。希望を失うな。
