＜されば汝らに告ぐ、審判の日にはソドムの地のかた汝よりも耐へ易からん』＞
審判の日には、主が教え、力ある業を行なわれたが悔改めないカペナウムの町よりも、悔改めをしなかったソドムの町のほうがはるかに耐えやすい。
＜されば汝らに告ぐ＞
これらの言葉が向けられるのは、主が教え、力ある業を行なわれたカペナウムの町である。
カペナウムの罪は信仰によって自己を高く引き上げ、一向に悔改めに至らない高慢である。
＜審判の日には＞
一般に「裁きの日」は「終末の日」（使徒17:31）を意味する。しかし、その日がいつかは知らされていない。（マタイ25:36） したがって、信じる者は自らの「今」に「裁きの日」の到来を緊張のうちにむかえるのである。
「裁きの日」はやがて来る日を意味するだけではなく、今ここに到着した日でもある。
＜ソドムの地のかた汝よりも耐へ易からん＞
ソドムの町は罪を悔改めることなく神の審判によって滅んだ。滅びを知る町は信仰の高ぶりの町よりも悔改めに近い。
