「裁きの日 ἡμέρᾳ κρίσεως」は「報復の日」（イザヤ34:8）である。神が世を裁かれる日であり、終末の審判をも指している。

「自分の時代」
聖書は人間の生涯のみならず、ある「時代」にむかっても神の審判の日がのぞむことを告げる。一つの文明、それに導かれる地域全体が神のことばに聞くや否やが問われる。人はみな「自分の時代」に属しており、その形成への責任を負う。

「宗教者の発言」
東日本大震災の後に、大規模な自然災害を「人間の傲慢に対する神の怒り」とする宗教者の発言があった。彼らは「審判の日」が近いと警告する。だが、これらは災害がもたらす不安につけこむ「お告げ」であって、真実を語るものではない。

ツロとシドンはフェニキヤに栄えた商業都市であったが、その「美しさと富」を誇り（エゼキエル27章）、「神のごとくに」ふるまった（エゼキエル28:6）。
それゆえに神は「暴虐な外国人（アッスリア、バビロン）」を立ち向かわせ、これらの都市は崩壊した（エゼキエル28:6~26）。
主の日には、自らの富におごり高ぶり、そのために審判を受けたツロとシドンよりも、神の力ある業を見ても悔改めなかったイスラエルよりも罪が軽い。
福音を聞いた者の責任というものがある。神のことばを聞くことの重みである。
軽々しく福音に接してはいけない。
福音を聞いても悔改めに至らないとき、その罪は福音を聞かずに審判を受ける者よりも重い。
福音は聞かなかった方がよいと考えるのは軽薄な思考である。福音は恵みによって神から来る。
福音を聞いた者は、聞かなかった者を指さして「主よこの人はどうなのですか？」と問うべきではない。聞く者はその恵みにあずかったことを喜び、身を震わせるような緊張のうちに、神のみことばに応えるのであり、その姿勢を導かれるのは聖霊御自身である。
