バプテスマのヨハネは「律法と預言」がイエスによって成就したことを告げる「最後の預言者」である。それゆえにヨハネは「預言者よりも優れた者」であり、「女の産みたる者のうち、バプテスマのヨハネより大なる者は起らざりき」と言われるのである。
＜されど天國にて小き者も、彼よりは大なり＞
ヨハネは「律法と預言」の世界がイエスによって実現し、神の国が来たことを告げた。到来を告げる者は偉大であるが、到来した神の国を受け、それを生きる人こそが到来を告げる者よりも偉大である。

「私であることの価値」
「天の国」には名も知れぬ小さき者が無数にいる。その小さき者の一人も、バプテスマのヨハネよりも「偉大 μείζων メイゾーン 驚くべき、壮大」である。人は「私」であることの価値を知らずに生きている。

「私になることの偉大さ」
「偉大さ」とは、なし得たことの「大きさ」ではなく、「私」になることの「偉大さ」にある。「私」以上の者になることなく、「私」以下になることでもない。ひたすらに「私」になることが人間の「偉大さ」である。
最も悲しいのは「私」になり得ることのできなかった人生である。

「神の言葉を聴く者」
教会の説教者は偉大だろうか？ イエスは神の言葉を聴く者のほうが告げる者よりも偉大だと語られている。神の国ではそのような驚くべき事がおきる。それを知っている説教者は偉大である。

「女の産みたる者」
「女の産みたる者」という表現は軽いものではない。人はみな「女の産みたる者」である。
「母」から「人間」として誕生した人は、霊によって新たに「人間」として誕生する。（ヨハネ３：３～８） 人間の肉体は霊的経験の秘密を知っている。

イエスはバプテスマのヨハネは「女の産みたる者のうち、バプテスマのヨハネより大なる者は起らざりき」と人々に告げられ、さらに「されど天國にて小き者も、彼よりは大なり」と教えられた。
ヨハネは「律法と預言」の世界がイエスによって実現し、神の国が来たことを告げた。
神の国の到来を告げる者は偉大である。それをなし得たバプテスマのヨハネは「およそ女から生まれた者のうち、洗礼者ヨハネより偉大な者は現れなかった」といわれる。
しかし、イエスは神の国の到来を告げ、その道を準備したバプテスマのヨハネはよりも、到来した神の国を受け、それを生きる人の方がはるかに偉大であると語られた。
神の国の到来を告げることよりも、神の国のいのちを生きる者こそが真に偉大である。
神の国の到来を告げる者は神の国のいのちを生きる者でなければならない。
