「あなたの父母を敬え」
父や母よりも神を愛する者に、神は「あなたの父母を敬え。そうすればあなたは、あなたの神、主が与えられる土地に長く生きることができる」（出エジプト20:12）と命じられる。
父や母よりも神を愛すると告白する者の信仰を信用することはできないし、またそのように推奨する宗教を認めるわけにはいかない。父や母をよりも神を愛する者は、父や母を何よりも愛する者だからである。愛に順序はない。神を愛するために、父母や息子娘を神の後に回す人の信仰はまやかしである。

この御言葉から父や母への愛よりも深く神を愛さなければならないというのは誤解である。肉親の情愛を禁じているのでも勿論ない。
まず、神は人間を創造された。神は「父なる神」である。（マタイ5:16）
人も、人の父母も神を「アバ父」と呼ぶ。（がラテヤ4:6）
「父なる神」とは神はいのちの創造者であり、存在の根源であることをあらわしている。
したがって、「父なる神」よりも「父または母を愛する」とは、自らの存在の根源を神ではなく人間に置くことを意味する。人間は神に創られたのではなく、人間から生まれた者である。人間は自らの身体を流れる「父母の血」を受け継ぐ者である。そこに乗り越え難い「父母」が存在する。「父母」に属するものを愛するのは、誰もが経験する人間の一つの苦悩である。
「我よりも父または母を愛する者は、我に相應しからず」は、この問題に一つの光を投じている。
神を「父なる神、存在の創造者」とするとき、「私」という存在がどのようであれ、神によって創られ、意味あるものとして存在しているのである。
「今、ここ」の現実も、間違いなく神によってもたらされたものとして意味をもって現れ来たものである。
神の創造されたこれらを愛し、心から敬いつつ生きるのである。
そうであれば、人間の苦悩を私に伝えた「父母という存在」もまた神の創られたいのちである。神の創造された「父母」として愛し、心から敬うのである。
ここに、人間の存在の意味をめぐって二つの選択がある。イエスはその一つを選んで従って来なさいと言われるのである。
