身を殺すことはできても霊魂を殺すことのできないものを恐れるな。むしろ、身も霊魂もゲヘナの火に焼くことのできるものを恐れよ。

人は身体を殺すことができるが、霊魂を殺すことはできない。だが、神は人間の身体も霊魂も滅ぼすことがおできになる。しかし、神は身体も霊魂も滅ぼされず、これを生かし給う。

＜ נֶכֶּשׁ nepes ネフェシュ 魂＞
「魂 נֶכֶּשׁ、πνεῦμα プネウマ」に相当する主なヘブライ語は「נֶכֶּשׁ nepes ネフェシュ」と「רוּחַ ruah ルーアハ」である。
「נֶכֶּשׁ」に相当するヘブライ語「נֶכֶּשׁ nepes ネフェシュ」は「息、心、霊、霊魂」と訳される。元来、「נֶכֶּשׁ nepes ネフェシュ」は「のど、首筋」を意味する言葉でイザ5:14には「陰府は喉（נֶכֶּשׁ ネフェシュ）を広げ、その口をどこまでも開く」とある。そこから転義して、「渇き、渇望、欲望」の意味でも使われる。箴23:2「食欲おうせいな人間なら、自分の喉にナイフをつきつけたも同じだ」の「食欲おうせいな人間」は「ネフェシュの持ち主」である。「ネフェシュを高く上げる」は、喉を突き上げてえさをねだる動物のように、「何かを強くあこがれる」ことを表わす（詩篇24:4）。
さらに「渇いたように生命を乞い求める人間存在」を表す。詩42:2「神に、命の神に、わたしの魂は渇く」と歌うとき、この「魂（ネフェシュ）」は人間の一部分を指す言葉ではなく、生命を渇望する人間そのものを表し、ここから、人間が渇望している「生命」をも表す。 （雨宮神父『新約聖書ギリシャ語辞典』より）

「魂を殺す者」
恐るべきは「体は殺さないが、魂を殺す者」がいることである。
「匕首」は鍔のない短剣で、昔、中国では「ビーショウ」と言われ、刺客が懐に隠し持っていたという。日本では江戸時代に「ドス」といわれた。「魂を殺す者」の口には「匕首」が隠されている。

いのちを創り、守られる神にあって、人は人間としての存在を見失うことなく、それを全うするのである。
したがって、キリスト者は身をとらえて滅ぼす者を恐れない。恐れるのはいのちの源である神を見失うことである。
