イエスが「暗闇であなたがたに言うこと」とは、マタイ4:16「異邦人のガリラヤ」から始まったイエスの「暗闇（死の暗黒、よみの闇、罪）への宣教のことば」を意味する。その住民は「暗黒に住む民」と呼ばれている。

「私に語られたこと」
イエスは、「暗闇」で「私」に密かに語られたことばを明るみに出し、「耳」のそばでかすかに聞いたことを光のなかで、屋根の上で大声で語れと言われる。
「私」に語られたことを私の内に閉じ込めてはいけない。それを白日のもとに引き出し、光をあて、屋根の上で説教できるほどにその意味を明確にしなければならい。
神は密やかに、かすかな声で語られる。魂を沈め、耳を傾けなければ聴き取ることはできない。それは「細き聲」である。それらは明るみに出され、屋根の上で大声で告げられるいのちの言葉である。
しかし、「屋根」に登る前に、それが神の「細き聲」、イエスの「耳打ち」であることを確かめる必要がある。耳打ちされたものがすべて神の声ではない。
