イエスは選ばれた十二使徒を、まず、イスラエルの地に派遣された。その後、福音は異邦人、サマリヤ人の町、全世界に伝えられた。

　＜イエスこの十二人を遣さんとて、命じて言ひたまふ＞

マルコ並行記事には、イエスは弟子たちを二人一組みにして宣教に遣わされたことが記されている。マルコマルコ6:7

派遣にあたり、イエスは十二弟子を「異邦人の道、サマリヤ人の町」に行くことを禁じられ、「イスラエルの家の滅びた羊のところに行きなさい」と命じられた。

　＜異邦人の途にゆくな＞

「異邦人の道」は「異邦人の住む地に通じる道」で「汚れた道」とされていた。「汚れに結ばれる道」の意味である。ユダヤ人にとって「サマリア」は異邦人との混血の行われた忌まわしい地であった。しかし、イエスはマタイ8:28で弟子たちと「異邦人の道」を行き「向こう岸のガダラ人の地」に入られている。ここでイエスは弟子たちに「汚れた異邦人の地に行くな」と命じられたのではなく、まず行くべき所を明確にされたのであろう。

　＜又サマリヤ人の町に入るな＞

紀元前721年、アッシリアのサルゴン二世がサマリヤを征服し、多数の異民族が各地から移住され、ユダヤ人との混血によって生まれたのが「サマリヤ人」であった。エルサレムの神殿に対して、サマリヤ人はゲリジム山に神殿を建て、混血を何よりも嫌うユダヤ人から何よりも忌み嫌われた。
