＜遂に弟子たちに言ひたまふ『收穫はおほく勞動人（はたらきびと）はすくなし＞
イエスは群衆が「飼う者のない羊」のように弱り果てているのを見て、弟子たちに「働き手」になるように促された。
＜收穫はおほく＞
「収穫」は前節の「その牧ふ者なき羊のごとく惱む群衆」にかかっている。イエスは群衆が、群れから離れた羊のように飢え乾いて荒野を彷徨いその後を野獣が襲撃の機会をつけ狙っているのをご覧になり、それを「穀物が熟している」と表現された。
＜勞動人（はたらきびと）はすくなし＞
「働き手 ἐργάτης エルガテース」 は「ἐργάζομαι 働く」からきた言葉である。この語は特に「畑で働く人、農夫、耕作者」を意味する。ἐργάτης に対する語は τεχνίτης 「技術者、職人」である。
したがって、「勞動人（はたらきびと）」とは「羊飼い」の勤めを果たす人である。群れから離れ、いのちの危機にある羊を救出する「勞動人（はたらきびと）」が足りない。

「刈り入れ時」
これは喜びの収穫ではない。病と貧困が人々を追いつめ、その苦悩は「刈り入れ時」のように極まったのである。しかも、「苦悩への働き人」はあまりの苦悩の深さに為す術を知らない。

「時を得て」
「働き人」とは人間の苦悩が熟しているところに遣わされる人である。時を失すれば、苦悩の実は落ちてしまう。時を得て刈り取れば、神の倉に収められる「値高き収穫」になる。

イエスは群衆が「飼う者のない羊」のように弱り果てているのを見て、弟子たちに刈り入れは多いが、働く人は少ない、収穫の主に働き手を送って下さるように祈りなさいと言われた。
穀物が収穫の時を迎える。それは喜びの刈り入れの時である。
しかし、ここでイエスの言われる「刈り入れ」は喜びの収穫ではない。
「収穫」は前節の「その牧ふ者なき羊のごとく惱む群衆」にかかっている。
イエスは群衆が、群れから離れた羊のように飢え乾いて荒野を彷徨いその後を野獣が襲撃の機会をつけ狙っているのをご覧になり、それを「穀物が熟している」と表現されたのである。
群衆は病と貧困に追い詰められ、苦悩の極まりにあった。
「働き人」とは、苦悩の極まりに遣わされる人のことである。
「収穫の主」である神は「苦悩の極まる人々」に仕える「働き手」を送り出される。
「苦悩の極まり」はそれによって「転換の時」となる。
なぜなら、神こそが、人の苦悩の極まるときを「喜びの狩り入れ場と転換し給うからである。
