群衆はイエスが男に罪の赦しを宣言し、病を癒されたことを目撃して心底驚き、このような権威をイエスに与えられた神を讃えた。

「恐れ φοβέομαι ふォベオマイ」は「恐怖に陥れる、畏怖する、驚愕する」の意味である。
Weymouth New Testament は、awe-struck 「畏怖の念に打たれ」と訳す。
＜かかる能力を人にあたへ給へる神を崇めたり＞
民衆の「畏怖の念」は、神が「かかる能力を人に与え給へる」ことにあった。民衆にとってイエスはあくまでも「人の子」であって「神」ではない。

「恐れ」と「賛美」
群衆に生じた「恐れ」は恐怖というよりも「驚愕」だった。人は「驚愕」からも神を賛美する。しかし、その内容は必ずしも正しいものではない。「恐れ」と「賛美」はなじまない。

「イエスの権威」
群衆は「人間にこれほどの権威をゆだねられた神」を賛美する。「人間」は複数形で、「人々に」である。イエスの罪の赦しと病の癒しの「権威」は、決して「人間」には与えられていない。群衆は常にそのような「権威」をもつ人間を期待する。しかし、いかなる人間もイエスの存在にはなり得ない。

中風を患う男が罪を赦され、病を癒され、「新しい人として復活した」のを目撃した群衆は、そのような権威を「人の子」に与えられた神を賛美した。
しかし、この「賛美」には「恐れ」が伴っていた。
「恐れ φοβέομαι ふォベオマイ」は「畏怖する、驚愕する」の意味とともに「恐怖に陥れる」という意味がある。
「畏怖」の感情には「恐怖」も入り混じっている。それが「畏怖」となるか「恐怖」となるかは事柄に接する人の思いによるのであろう。
群衆は「人間にこれほどの権威をゆだねられた神」を賛美する。ここでの「人」は複数形で、「人々に」である。厳密には群衆のいう「人の子」はイエスを指すよりも、「人間」を意味していると受け取ることもできる。
イエスの罪の赦しと病の癒しの「権威」は、決して「人間」には与えられていない。しかし、群衆はそのような「権威」をもつ人間を期待している。いかなる人間もイエスの存在にはなり得ないことを確認する必要がある。
神への「畏怖」は必ずしも信仰の告白ではない。たとえ、イエスに心底「驚き、畏怖し、神を賛美している」としても、信仰とは別の「群衆の信」に過ぎない。
信仰とは罪の赦しが我が身に起こり、「新しき人としていのちの復活」を経験することである。彼は真に「驚き」となる。
