イエスは眠りから覚め、「なにゆゑ臆するか、信仰うすき者よ」と弟子たちの心を宥め、風と海を戒められると嵐はおさまり、凪になった。
＜なにゆゑ臆するか＞
大正文語訳は「臆する」と訳す。漢字の「臆」は「月」＋「意」で心に感情の湧き上がる胸を意味する。胸の動悸をおしはかり断定することをさす。
＜信仰うすき者よ＞
「信仰の薄い者 ὀλιγόπιστος オリゴピストス」は「ὀλίγος 小さい ＋ πίστις 信仰」で「信仰小さき者」永井直治訳 である。
マルコは「どうして信仰がないのか。マルコ4:40」、ルカは「あなたがたの信仰は、どこにあるのか。 ルカ8:25」とイエスの言葉を記している。
＜風と海とを禁め給へば、大なる凪となりぬ＞
マルコとルカによれば、寝ておられたイエスが立ち上がり、風と荒浪とを「静まれ、黙れ」とおしかりになると、風はやんで、大なぎになったと記している。

「怖れ」を知らない信仰は確かなものではない。嵐の中で「怖れ」に気づかぬほうがよほど「怖い」。
イエスが「信仰小さき者」と呼ばれるのは、イエスがおられるところで、イエスがいないかのように振舞うことに対してである。

「風と湖を叱る」
イエスが風と湖を「叱る ἐπιτιμάω エピティマオー 値踏みする、（悪く）評価する、避難する、いさめる、葬る、値段を上げる、罰する、非難する、叱責する、悪し様にいう」と、風と湖は静けさを取り戻した。
激しい嵐も自然にとっては「平穏」な営みである。しかし、人間には「怒り」と映る。人は自然に「怒り」を感じて怯える。だが我々は、それが自然の「平穏」であることを忘れている。自然はその懐に災いも幸いも、すべてを包み込む。神はその懐の中に生きるよう人間を創造された。

「凪 なぎ」
「凪 なぎ」は「風」が「止む」と書く。風が止み、海がおだやかになることである。
女の子に心をなごませる子への期待から「凪」の字を名に入れることもある。「愛凪 あいな」「絢凪 あやな」は可愛い名だが、だれにも読めるようでもない。

イエスが身近に居られるところで弟子たちは「我らは滅ぶ」と叫んだ。
「信仰の薄い者 ὀλιγόπιστος オリゴピストス」は「ὀλίγος 小さい ＋ πίστις 信仰」で「信仰小さき者」永井直治訳 である。
「信仰の薄い者 ὀλιγόπιστος オリゴピストス」はイエスの居られるところでイエスがおられないかのように振舞う。
しかし、イエスはそのような「信仰の薄い者」を退け給わない。嵐の海で恐怖に慄く弟子たちと一つの舟に乗られている。
自分の「信仰の小さいこと」を恥じる必要はない。「小さな信仰」のままにイエスと共にあるべきだ。
やがて、イエスは嵐に命じて「凪」をもたらされる。
