＜かくて舟に乘り給へば、弟子たちも從ふ＞
イエスと弟子たちは集まった群衆を岸にのこして、対岸のゲラサ人の地に向かわれた。
＜向こう岸へ＞
イエスは弟子たちに「向こう岸へ行く」ために舟の準備をするように命じておられた。（マタイ8:18） 弟子たちは動かせる舟を手配するために走り回り、ようやく準備ができた。もう夕方になっていたが、イエスは「向こう岸へ渡ろう」と言われたのである。（マルコ4:35）
＜かくて舟に乘り給へば、弟子たちも從ふ＞
マルコは舟が一艘ではなかったことを記録している。（「ほかの舟も一緒に行った。」 マルコ4:36）
他の舟に誰が乗ったかはわからない。イエスのところに集まった群衆の中には自分たちも舟を出してイエスと共に向こう岸を目指したのかもしれない。

「イエスと同じ道」
イエスと弟子たちだけが乗り込めるほどの小さな舟だった。「イエスと同じ道を歩む」は「イエスと二人舟に乗る」である。イエスが「私」という舟に乗り込まれてくる。目的地まで一つ舟である。

「夜の船出」
これは「夜の船出」だった。ペテロをはじめとして、弟子の多くは漁師だった。海を仕事場にする彼らにとっても、夜の海に漕ぎ出すことはめったにはないことだった。
しかし、イエスに従う者は、イエスと共に「夜の海」に乗り出すことも経験する。行先ははっきりしているが、周囲は暗黒である。

イエスと弟子たちは群衆から離れ、ゲラサ人の地に向かわれた。祈りのために静かさをもとめてのことだった。
舟は一艘では間に合わず、二艘に分散しての船出だった。（マルコ4:36）
夜の海に漕ぎだすことは漁師だったペテロ達にとっても異例のことだった。
熱狂的にイエスに従う群衆から離れ、祈りの場を探されるとはいえ、夜の海は「荒れ模様」であり、異邦人のゲラサ人の地には「悪霊に憑かれたふたりの男」が待っていた。
イエスは「御自分を必要とする者」の所に行かれる。
たとえそれが、異邦人の地に墓場に棲む「悪霊に憑かれたふたりの男」であっても、そこに行くには夜の大暴風に荒れる海にも漕ぎ出だされる。
イエスは「私」の所に来たり給うのである。
