百卒長の依頼を受けたユダヤ人の長老たちにイエスは「行って彼の僕を癒してあげよう」と言われた。
＜イエス言ひ給ふ『われ往きて醫さん』＞
「われ往きて ἔρχομαι エルこマイ」は「近づく、臨む、達する」こと。
イエスは病める者の床、悩む者の伏屋に来られる。
「癒す θεραπεύω てラペウオー」というギリシャ語は「 θεράπων 召使い、下僕」から来た言葉で、「奉仕する、仕える」から「治療する、いやす、直す、看護する、手当する」という意味になったものである。
＜われ往きて醫さん＞
塚本虎二は本節を、「（ユダヤ人の）このわたしが、（異教人のあなたの家に）行ってなおすのか」と訳している。
ユダヤの教えでは、異邦人の家は「汚れている」として、ユダヤ人が入ることを禁止していた。
ローマ人である百人隊長はユダヤ人の宗教を知っており、イエスが「われ往きて醫さん」という言葉に「（ユダヤ人の）このわたしが、（異教人のあなたの家に）行ってなおすのか」という意味を聞き取ったのであろう。

ユダヤ人の長老達がローマの百卒長の僕の病のためにイエスとの間を取り持ったのは、この百卒長がユダヤ人に理解が深い人物だったからである。この百卒長に「貸し」を作ることは政治的に意味あることと踏んだのかもしれない。
長老達の話を聞いたイエスは、「それではわたしが行って、いやしてあげよう」と言われた。
イエスの言葉を聞いて、長老達は戸惑ったに違いない。
ユダヤ教は「穢れている」という理由で異邦人の家に入ることを禁止していたからである。
「わたしが行って ἔρχομαι エルこマイ」は「私自身が近づいて」の意味である。
イエスは異邦人であるローマの百卒長の家に私自身が近づいて、いやしてあげよう」と言われたからである「癒す θεραπεύω てラペウオー」というギリシャ語は「 θεράπων 召使い、下僕」から来た言葉で、「奉仕する、仕える」から「治療する、いやす、直す、看護する、手当する」という意味になったものである。
「癒し人」とは耐え難い痛みに「仕える」人のことである。
イエスはユダヤ人からは「穢れた異邦人の家に寝かせられている異邦人の若者」の病に「仕える」ために行かれた。
