カペナウムにの百卒長はユダヤの長老たちを通じて、イエスに僕の一人が中風でいのちの危機にあることを訴える。
＜請ひていふ『主よ、わが僕＞
百人隊長の下僕は中風で苦しんでいた。下僕は百人隊長が「頼みにしていた僕」で、その病状は「死にかかっていた」ほどに重篤であった。（ルカ7:2）
＜中風を病み、家に臥しゐて甚く苦しめり＞
「中風 παραλυτικός パラりゅティコス」は「παραλύω ぐらぐらにゆれる、弱める、麻痺させる」からくる言葉で「弱くされた者」である。
現在では「中風」は脳血管障害の後遺症である半身不随、まひなどを意味する。しかし、伝統的な中国医学では「中」は「あたる」の意味で、「風邪（ふうじゃ）」が身体に入り、発熱、咳、頭痛、悪寒などを引き起こすとされる。
百人隊長の部下の病は現代の「中風」ではなく、激しい発熱と痛みをともなう麻痺を引き起こす病であったのかもしれない。

「ひどく苦しむ」
百人隊長の僕は中風でひどく苦しんでいた。「ひどく苦しむ βασανίζω バサニゾー」は「恐ろしい、並外れた、危険な、驚くほど強い激しい、強烈な、異様な」苦しみ。それは人間を試すような試練だった。「痛み」は脳が感じるものだが、脳が「痛み」を感じない「痛み」というものもある。

「良き羊飼い」
この百人隊長は「一匹の彷徨う羊のために九十九匹を野において探す羊飼い」のように、百人の部下の中の、中風で苦しむ一人の若い兵士のためにイエスを訪れる。兵士はこのような百人隊長のためにこそ、戦場で命をかけて戦うのである。

へブル語で「病」は動詞「弱くなる;」から来ている。ギリシャ語は νόσος である。
病は人を弱くし、生きる力を奪う。

「衾裯（ふすま）」は寝るとき身体にかける夜具である。病の身体にかけられた寝具を神は敷変えて下さる。

カペナウムの百卒長がイエスに直訴するのではなく、ユダヤの長老を介したのは、ローマ軍の組織のもとにあって動く者として、イエスをユダヤ人の信頼を集める指導者と認めた上での謙虚な姿勢であった。
百卒長が配下にかかえる100人あまりの兵士の中の「一人の若い兵士」が中風にかかっていた。
現代的理解では「中風」は脳血管障害の後遺症である半身不随、まひなどを意味する。
しかし、伝統的な中国医学では「中」は「あたる」の意味で、「風邪（ふうじゃ）」が身体に入り、発熱、咳、頭痛、悪寒などを引き起こすとされる。

百卒長は大勢の兵士を部下とかかえていたが、その内の一人の、それもまだ年若く、さして功績のあったとは思えない一兵卒に、知れる限りの手当をつくしたが、かなわず、ついにイエスの評判を聞き、何とか助けていただけないかとユダヤ人の長老たちに相談し、彼らを介してイエスに状況を伝えたのである。
ローマの兵が敵に向かって一歩も引かずに戦ったのは、このような指導者のもとにあったからである。
イエスもカペナウムの百卒長のためにカペナウムに向かわれたのである。
