「いのち」に至る門は狭く、容易に入れない。その道は細く、見出す者も少ない。
＜生命にいたる門は狹く＞
「いのち ζωή ゾーエー」は「生きて活気ある」こと。
漢字の「生」は草木が地に生えるさまをかたどったもの。芽が出てやがて成長していくものを意味する。「生命」とは「それなしには成り立たないもの」の意味。
＜狭き門＞
King James Version は「strait [is] the gate」。「the strait gate」は「狭き門」である。「狭き」には「厳重、厳格」の意味がある。
「いのちへの門」は通過するも難儀な門である。
黒崎幸吉によれば、「στενός ステノス」には「真直なる」の意味も含まれているという。
＜その路は細く、之を見出す者すくなし＞
「その道は細い」の「道」は「θλίβω トりボー （圧縮された）細い道」のこと。「上から強く圧し、押しつぶされた」道である。「θλίβω トりボー」には「悩ます、苦しめる、追いつめる」の意味もある。
Young’s Literal Translation は、「compressed the way」とする。
「細い道」は、「悩み、苦しみ」に押しつぶされた道である。しかし、人はその道で「細き聲」を聴く。

「狭い門」には、似てはいるが別物がある。くぐりさえすれば広い道にでるような「狭い門」がそれである。本当の「狭い門」は「細き道」にあり、それに至る。潜り抜けた後も一本の「私」という「細き道」が続く。
だが、この「細き道」は世界ほどに広い。

押しつぶされ、今はなき「道」を見出すこと。人の行かない道は、人の居ない道ではない。かつてある人が歩いた、その足跡の見えるような道である。そして、歩くうちに「かつてのその人」は、いつの間にか後ろになるような道である。

群衆の中に身を置くと、どこか安心する。大勢の人の行き来する「大路」なら間違いない気がする。
しかし、もし、「真実」をもとめるのなら、大勢の人の集まるところに行くべきではない。
真実のいのちは「狭き門」であり、それに至る道は細い。
「狭き門」とそれに通じる「細い道」は小さい門のことではない。「見出すに困難な門」である。
求めもしなくてもわかりやすく目の前にある大門ではなく、求め、捜し、叩かなければ開かれない「門」である。
「見出すに困難な門」ではあるが、求め、捜し、叩く者には誰であっても必ず「開かれる門」である。
「求めなさい。そうすれば与えられます。捜しなさい。そうすれば見つかります。たたきなさい。そうすれば開かれます。だれであれ、求める者は受け、捜す者は見つけ出し、たたく者には開かれます。」マタイ7:7~8 新改訳聖書
