「求めよ」の結論は、「人に求めることは自ら人になす」ことである。それは聖書の教えの中心である。

トビト書4:15には「なんじ自ら憎むことを、たれにもなすな」とある。（日本聖公会訳） 「お前自身が嫌うことを他人にしてはならない」（フランシスコ会訳）
この消極的な教えに対して、イエスは「凡て人に爲られんと思ふことは、人にも亦その如くせよ」と積極的な愛を教えられた。
＜これは律法なり、預言者なり＞
律法と預言者の書に「人に爲られんと思ふことは、人にも亦その如くせよ」ということばは見い出せない。
「律法と預言者」とは、一言でいえば「聖書」であり、「人にしてもらいたいと思うことは何でも、あなたがたも人にしなさい」に聖書全体があらわされている。

「してもらいたいこと」
自分に「してもらいたい」という理由でしたのに、相手がそうしないのは、相手が「してもらいたい」と思っていないからかもしれない。「してもらいたい」ことを相手にする前に、相手がそれを望むかどうかを考えなければならない。

「してほしくないこと」
「してほしくない」ことは「しない」のと、「してもらいたい」ことを「する」のでは大きな違いがある。相手から「してもらいたい」ことをしているのに、相手からは「してもらえない」ことが多い。しかし、それはそれでよいのである。

「汝生かせ」
トビト書4:15「なんじ自ら憎むことを、たれにもなすな」は、イエスの教えでは「人に爲られんと思ふことは、人にも亦その如くせよ」である。
律法は「汝殺すなかれ」と命じる。しかし、イエスの律法に従えば、「汝生かせ」と読むことができる。殺さずとも生かすのでなければ、「殺している」のである。「自ら憎むことを、誰に対してもしない」が「人にして欲しいこともしない」なら、その人は「自ら憎むこと」を人にしているのである。

「自分にしてもらいたいこと」
あまり付き合いたくない人から贈り物をされたら、できるだけ早く、それと同額の品を返せばよいという。しかし、そういう人に限って、それと同額の品が、それも出来るだけ早く返ってきたりする。つまり、それは相手もこちらを「あまり付き合いたくない」と思っていることなのかもしれない。
時には何もしないことが、「してもらいたいことを相手にする」ことであるときもある。

「易地思之」
「易地思之」は「互いに相手の立場で考える」の意味である。韓国でこの言葉は역지사지（ヨクチサジ）で「相手が自分の立場を思いやること」と理解されるという。
「自分が相手の身になる」にしても、「相手が自分の立場に立つことを期待する」にしても、「互いに相手の立場になること」が欠ければうまくはゆくまい。

「相手への期待」

「だから、何事でも、人から自分にしてもらいたいと望むことを、人にもしてあげなさい。」
この御言葉の通りにしたが、相手は一向に「自分がしたようにはしてくれない」という悩みは尽きない。
そのとき、考えてみたいのは相手も又同じように感じているかもしれないということである。
相手の存在を「つまらない」と感じ、自分がするように「楽しく」振舞っても、相手に伝わるのは「つまらない」という本音である。
相手の存在を自分の好みに合わせようとするのではなく、相手をそのままに喜ぶことだ。そうすれば相手もこちらを喜んでくれる。
