＜魚を求めんに蛇を與へんや＞
子どもが魚を求めるのに、〔似ているからといって〕蛇を与えるだろうか。
＜魚を求めんに＞
ギリシャ語には「魚」をあらわす言葉がいくつかある。ὀψάριον は「料理した魚」でご馳走である。マタイ7:10の「魚」は 「ἰχθύς イくとゆス」で「小魚」である。
子どもが求めたのは、ご馳走とはいえない「小魚」である。
＜蛇を與へんや＞
「蛇 ὄφις オふィス」 。パレスチナに「蛇」は多く生息し、その数は30種類以上に及ぶという。ὄφις は一般的な蛇の総称である。へブル語で「蛇」は「はうもの」の意味である。
バークレイは「蛇」を「うなぎ」と理解する。

「石とパン」
ルカ11:12「また、卵を欲しがるのに、さそりを与える父親がいるだろうか」 新共同訳聖書
「石とパン、魚と蛇、卵とさそり」は、それぞれが似て非なるもののことである。当時のパンは石のようにかたく、形も丸かった。蛇は「うなぎ」のこととする説もある。「うなぎ」は魚だが律法で食べる事を禁止されていた。卵の形に似たサソリがいるという。
似ているとはいえ、食べ物を欲しがる子どもに石や蛇やさそりを与える親はいない。しかし、子どもを養うのに必要なものと不要なものの区別がつかず、有毒で危険なものを与えて気づかない親もいる。

「魚と蛇」
人は、それが「石や蛇やさそり」とわかった上で食べようとするところがある。魚と蛇があるのを見て、空腹なのに蛇を求めるのだ。
ただしく与えられるには、正しく求めなければならない。

魚を求める子に、形が似ているからと蛇を与える親はいない。それをしても子どもは喜ばない。
子が「蛇」を求める子に、それはだめだと魚を渡しても、やはり子どもは喜ばないだろう。
親は子に与える前に、我が子が求めるものが真に必要かどうかを慎重に考えなければならない。
そして、どうじて我が子が「それ」を求めるのかを知らなければならない。それを問いかけるだけで問題が解決するときもある。
「与える」ことは「与えない」こともあってこそ有効である。
私が神に求めるとき、神はしばしば、「何故お前はそれを求めるのか」と問われる。それで、やっと私は「魚」ではなく「蛇」を求めているのだと気づいたのである。
神は求める前から、私に必要なものをご存知である。
