人をさばく人は、外からでは見ることも出来ない「目の中のちり」ほどの欠点もみのがさない。しかし、その人の目には「うつばり」があるのに気づきもしない。
＜何ゆゑ兄弟の目にある塵を見て＞
「おが屑 κάρφος カルふォス」は 「κάρφω 乾かす」からきた言葉で、「乾いた茎、小枝、わら、木片」の意味である。「細かいちり」である。
英語 mote は「ほこり、微片」から「汚点、きず」の意味に用いる。
明治元訳「物屑(ちり)」、大正文語訳、ラゲ訳「塵」。
＜おのが目にある梁木(うつばり)を認めぬか＞
「丸太 δοκός ドコス」は「梁、桁、かんぬき」を意味する。「木の横材」である。
英語 beam は船の横梁などに使われる太い「梁」である。

「自分の目の丸太」
「おが屑 κάρφος カルふォス」は「乾いた茎、小枝、わら、ちり、木片、破片」のこと。兄弟の目にある小さな「おが屑」を「見る βλέπω ブれポー （肉眼で）見る、凝視する、じっと見る、熱望する、見やる」、いとも容易くそれを見出す。
しかし、自分の目に「丸太 δοκός ドコス 梁、桁、かんぬき、木の横材」があっては、視界は閉ざされて、兄弟の目におが屑など、とても見ることは出来まい。彼が兄弟の目に見る「おが屑 κάρφος カルふォス」なるものは、確かなものであるはずもない。

「人の目の丸太」
人の目に「丸太 δοκός ドコス」があり、視野が閉ざされ、視力を失っていることは、いち早く分る。しかし、それを指摘する者の目にも「丸太」があり、彼以上に「見えない」という事実に気づかない。見えると言い張る者は見えていない、知っていると思う者は知っていない。自分の目に「丸太」のあるのを認める者は見えており、自分は知っていないと知る者は知ったのである。

自分の目に「丸太」があると、どうして分かるのか？
人の目の「塵」が気になって、どうしてもそれを取り除かなければと悩むなら、自分の目には「丸太」が入っている。「丸太の目」は、何故か人の目の「塵」がよく見える。

人の目にある「ちり」は見ようとしても見えるものではない。本人も見えるわけではなく、その「痛み」でちりの存在を感じるのである。
形も見えない「ちり」を人は実によく見ぬく。目の異物の存在からくる「痛み」を見抜くのである。
しかし、他人の目には見えない心の痛みをあばきたてることをするその人の目に「はり」があるのに気づかないばかりか、その「痛み」も感じていない。
笑うことはできない。これはすべての人の現実である。
他人の目に見えない「ちり」でさえ、鋭い「痛み」を発し、他人に知られざるをえないなら、自分の目の「はり」がもたらす「痛み」はどれほどのもだろうか？ 「目のはりの痛み」は他人には実によく見えるのである。
