求める者には真に必要とするものを与えよ。あなたから借りようとする者に真に必要とするものを与えるよ。
＜なんぢに請ふ者にあたへ＞
「求める αἰτέω アイテオー」は「後で返すことにして求める」である。（岩隈直『新約ギリシャ語辞典』）「後で返すので貸してください」の意味になる。
その者には「貸す」のではなく「与え δίδωμι ディドーミ」なさい。
＜借らんとする者を拒むな＞
「借りる δανείζω ダネイゾー」は「（利息を払って）金を借りようとする」者である。ユダヤの法律は同胞から利息をとることを禁じている。（レビ25:37） しかし、ユダヤ人以外からは利息をとることが認められていた。（申命記23:20）
したがって、この「（利息を払って）金を借りようとする者」は異国人である。同胞でもない異教の民が求めてきたのである。神の民はこのような人々にも「背を向けてはならない」。

「背を向ける」
「背を向ける ἀποστρέφω アポストレふォー」は 「ἀπό ＋ στρέφω 顔をそむける」の意味で「顔を背ける、立ち返す、拒絶する」こと。
借りようとする者から顔をそむけてはいけない。顔をそむけて貸すくらいなら断るべきである。

「乞われるままに与える」
「乞われたら断るべきではない」というのは一種の強迫観念である。「断れない」のは精神の未熟であり、その人は「与える」こともできない。
何が求められているかを吟味しないで「乞われるままに与える」のは軽卒である。「与えない」という与え方もある。
「求める者の求め」は、何が求められているか知らずに与えることによって応えられていることも多い。

「与える」
「あなたから借りる δανείζω ダネイゾー」は「（利息を払って）金を借りる」である。
「利子を払うから貸して」と乞われて、貸さないことは罪だろうか。今は、銀行に断られた人が、金を貸して欲しいとやってくる。彼は「利子を払う」こともできない人なのである。「貸す」というよりも「与える」ことができるのなら「貸せば」よい。それができないなら「貸す」べきではなく、それは「借りようとする者に、背を向ける」ことではない。

この教えは「請われるままに与え、求められるままに貸す」ことでは決してない。「与える」にも「貸す」にもある責任が伴うからである。「請われるままに与えた」ことの結果や、「求められるままに貸した」ことへの結果にたいする責任を負うことなく与えることが罪となることもある。
「請ふ者」に与えず、「求める者」に貸さないことが愛であることも少なくない。
貸すことや与えることが真実にかなうなら、たとえ、それが返済を期待できない相手であっても拒んではならない。
どうしたら「真実」を知ることができるだろうか？ たいていの場合、「真実」はことが終わってからでないと見えないのである。
