イエスの墓を見張っていたローマ兵たちは地震と共に大石が転がり、その上に天の使いが座るのを目撃して恐ろしさのあまり震え上がる。極度の恐怖は人から思考力を奪い、息をすることもできない「死人」の状態にする。
人はしばしば夢の中で、この恐怖を味わう。夢はどうしてこの「恐怖」を覚えているのだろうか？

「戰 おののく」
漢字「戰 おののく」は、「單」＋「戈」で、「單」は「はじき弓」、「戈」は「ほこ」で「たたかう」を意味する。
飛び交う矢にほこをかざして、ふるえ恐れる。番兵たちは大いなる地震と御使いを見て、戦の最中に感じる恐怖に襲われたのである。

番兵として夜通し墓を見張っていたローマ兵たちは地震と共に墓を塞いでいた大石が脇に転がり、その上に光輝く主の使いが坐するのをみて、恐れおののいて震え上がり、「死人のように」なった。
ローマ兵は死をおそれない勇猛さで知られる。そのローマ兵が恐ろしさのあまり震え上がり、死人のようになったというのは、彼らが味わったことのない恐怖に襲われたからであろう。神の臨在は、恐怖を越えた怖れを人間にもたらす。ローマ兵が経験したのはそのような怖れであった。
「恐れ」はローマ兵だけではなく、墓を訪れた女たちもまた同様であった。しかし、恐怖からローマ兵はいちはやくその場を離れたのに対して、信仰深い女たちはなおそこに留まったのである。彼女たちを、そこに留まらせたのは「畏れ」であった。
