ユダは自分がローマ兵を手引きしても、イエスは「天の軍勢」を呼びよせてこれを退け、あわせて祭司長や長老たちの野望を打ち砕かれると考えたのかもしれない。ユダはなお他の弟子たちのようにイエスを信じていた。しかし、その信仰はイエスを見てはいない。

ユダはイエスを裏切るための「金」を受け取った。受け取ってはならぬものを懐に入れた瞬間から、それの意味する行動が始まる。

ユダの裏切りに、もっとも驚いたのは祭司長や律法学者たちであったろう。イエスの最も信頼する12弟子の一人が自ら名乗り出たのである。祭司長や律法学者らはユダのことばに、「裏切り」を確信し、そのもたらす情報に微塵も疑うことはなかった。彼らのユダを見る目は確かだったのである。悪は悪をよく判断する。祭司長や律法学者はイエス捕縛のためにイスカリオテのユダを利用することにしたのである。
