朝の九時になって、ぶどう園の主人が広場行ってみると、「何もしないで ἀργός アルゴス」広場に立っている人々がいた。「何もしないで ἀργός アルゴス」は「休閑中の畑」を指すのにも使われる言葉である。彼らは生み出すものがなく、仕上げるもののない状態にいた。
彼らは朝仕事を求めて広場にやってきたが、雇ってもらうことができなかった。しかし、家に帰ることもできずに広場に立っていたのである。まだ、「一日」をあきらめることができないままに「何かを待つ」人々だった。

一日には、その日に「磨き、仕上げ、生み出す」ものがある。それを見つけることの出来ない「朝」ほどつらいものはない。
ユダヤ人は一日を日没から始める。一日は床につく前に始まっている。明日に「磨き、仕上げ、生み出す」ものを胸に安らかに眠るのである。その夜がなければ朝は来ない。

「朝九時の人々」
「朝九時の人々」は広場に「座り込む」ことをせず、立っている。
外国人労働者が数多く居住している町では、朝早く、その日の職を求めて人々は街角に立つ。一刻、その日の労働者を集める喧噪があり、九時にもなれば町は静かになるが、街角には幾人かの人々が残る。携帯であちこちに連絡をとりながら仕事を探すのである。
人は毎日、その日の仕事に恵まれるのではない。昨日は雇われても、今日は「残された人々」として「磨き、仕上げ、生み出す」もののない一日を過ごさなければならない。だが、ぶどう園の主人は朝九時にも広場にやってくる。

私たちにうらやましいのは「広場」という存在である。ローマではどの町も中央に「広場」があり、そこから各方面に道路が敷設された。道をたどれば「広場」にでることができた。人々は一日に一度は必ず「広場」に行った。必要なものは何でも「広場」で見出すことができた。
広場で人々は商いをし、交渉をした。病人は「広場」に寝かされた。（マルコ6:5） ヨブは「広場」に座った。「私は町の門に出て行き、私のすわる所を広場に設けた」（ヨブ記29:7） 「知恵」は「広場でその声を上げた」（箴言1:20~21）
「広場」には生と死があった。「広場」は強い人のものではなく、弱い人の座る場でもあった。人が一個の人間として人と出会う場所であった。
ぶどう園の主人は「三番目の時間（午前九時）」にも町の広場に行ってみた。すると、仕事も見つけられないままに立っている人々がいた。

神の「ぶどう畑」には朝九時から始まる「仕事」が準備されている。
なすすべもなく広場に立つ私をイエスは見出してくださる。
